(Johannesburg, 25 October 2024) — Celebrating Día de los Muertos, Espolòn has launched a trio of cocktails that pay homage to the Mexican tradition of honoring the departed with joy, flavor, and vibrant spirits. In this cultural fusion, the new Espolòn cocktail line invites us to partake in a colorful legacy that highlights the journey of life, death, and the reunion of spirits.
Día de los Muertos, or "Day of the Dead," spans from October 31 to November 2. It’s a celebration where remembrance meets revelry. Spirits, symbolized by colorful marigolds and intricate ofrendas (altars), are invited back to the world of the living in a series of days marked by love, laughter, and offerings. Each date within the celebration carries a distinct resonance:
October 31: Spirits begin their journey, as families prepare to welcome them.
November 1: Known as Día de los Inocentes, or "Day of the Innocents," this day honors children and angelitos (little angels).
November 2: The climax, Día de los Muertos, when the spirits of adults are celebrated with rich altars adorned with photos, favorite foods, and mementos.
This year, Espolòn’s vibrant tribute includes three unique cocktail recipes crafted to stir up the spirit of the season:
1. Espolòn Old Fashioned
Ingredients: 60ml Espolòn Añejo, 1 bar spoon agave nectar, 2 dashes Angostura bitters
Preparation: Stir all ingredients with ice and strain into an Old Fashioned glass over a large ice cube. Garnish with an orange twist and maraschino cherry for that quintessential warm finish.
2. Grand Margarita
Ingredients: 45ml Espolòn Reposado or Blanco, 30ml fresh lime juice, 15ml agave syrup, 15ml Grand Marnier or Cointreau
Preparation: Shake ingredients with ice, strain into a salt-rimmed margarita glass, and garnish with a lime wheel. This one’s zesty, tangy, and unapologetically fun.
3. Mexican Mule
Ingredients: 45ml Espolòn Blanco, 15ml fresh lime juice, ginger beer, fresh mint, lime wheel
Preparation: In a mule mug or highball glass, combine tequila and lime juice over ice, top with ginger beer, and garnish with fresh mint and a lime wheel. A bit of spice and a whole lot of cool.
The cultural connection with Día de los Muertos runs deep for Espolòn, which lost its visionary Maestro Tequilero, Cirilo Oropeza, in October 2020. Cirilo’s legacy lives on through Espolòn’s spirits, which embody courage, creativity, and authenticity. Honoring him through these special cocktails, Espolòn is giving back to the tradition that inspired their craft.
